Why We Are

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901-1925)
Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901–1925) was an Italian layman known for his deep faith, charity, and love for the outdoors. Born into a wealthy family, he dedicated his life to serving the poor while also excelling as a student and mountaineer. A devout Catholic, he was active in social and political causes, advocating for justice and the dignity of the marginalized. He died at the age of 24 from polio, likely contracted from the sick he cared for. Beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1990, he is a patron of young people and outdoor enthusiasts.

Pope John Paul II (1920 – 2005)
Pope John Paul II had a lifelong passion for hiking and the outdoors. As a young priest in Poland, he often took students on mountain hikes, combining physical activity with spiritual discussions. Even as a bishop and later as pope, he continued to escape to the mountains whenever possible, enjoying skiing and trekking in the Italian Alps. His love for nature was deeply tied to his spirituality, seeing the outdoors as a place to encounter God. Despite his demanding role, he maintained his enthusiasm for hiking until his health declined. His deep appreciation for nature influenced his teachings on environmental stewardship and the human connection to creation.

St. Francis of Assisi (1181–1226)
St. Francis of Assisi (1181–1226) had a profound love for nature, seeing all creation as a reflection of God’s beauty and goodness. He viewed animals, plants, and even the elements as his “brothers” and “sisters,” emphasizing the interconnectedness of all living things. His deep spirituality led him to preach to birds, show compassion to animals, and celebrate God’s presence in the natural world. This love for creation is beautifully expressed in his Canticle of the Sun, which praises the sun, moon, wind, and all of nature. His legacy continues to inspire environmental stewardship and care for creation.

Beauty = Truth
Something from Nothing
God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. (Gen 1:31)
Science explains the how, but God explains the why. All you have to do is listen. This means that while science can detail the mechanisms and processes behind natural phenomena, it typically doesn’t address the larger questions of purpose, meaning, or reason behind existence, which are often considered the domain of God. The hikes put us in His domain and afford a connection to His Spirit.
All are welcome!
For now, brothers and sisters, Hiking and Healing is devoted to the Christian faith, that is the Holy Bible, books 1 – 73, aka scripture, God’s word, and the gospel of His son, Jesus Christ, the one true living God, and His Holy Spirit. We praise the Creator through the Holy Trinity and also through the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Holy Mother. Eventually, Hiking and Healing will reach out to other faiths and seek to create a pathway to God for everyone .
